Project Motivation

Problems using traditional welding masks
Homogeneous light reduction - environment not visible due to high attenuation
Welding seam hardly visible
Welding machine settings not accessible during welding
Actual electrical parameters not available for welder

Project Objectives
Design an intelligent welding mask for the welding observation
Effects
Improvement and augmentation of visual information
Image and parameter documentation for weld inspection
Image Acquisition
Using two HDRC cameras(High-Dynamic-Range CMOS)for stereoscopic representation
Image Processing and Augmented Reality
Using wearable computer(embedded PC)
Improve the contrast and brightness in the environment of the welding scene, while preserving the image properties in the welding arc area
Extract additional data from images: dimension and shape of the welding arc, identifcation and tracking of the welding seam, workpiece, position and inclination of the welding torch and welding speed
Welding Quality Documentation
Using a stationary PC
Acquire welding parameters from the welding power supply (welding current, voltage, wire feed speed), send data to the user via wireless LAN and elaborate documentation
Generate and Display Images
Using a stereoscopic Head-Mounted-Display
Merging of extracted information with welding machine parameters
